How to Choose an SF6 Gas Analyzer: Dew Point, Purity, SO2 and Gas Recovery

“We need an SF6 gas analyzer.” This is a common starting point for an enquiry, but it does not yet define the required configuration.

An instrument may measure moisture, SF6 purity or selected decomposition products. It may also include sample-gas recovery. Each function answers a different question, so selection should begin with the testing task and the equipment manufacturer’s requirements.

Dew Point: How Much Moisture Is Present?

Dew point measurement helps assess the moisture condition of the gas.

When comparing instruments, check the measurement range, accuracy, sampling requirements and pressure basis used to report the result. A dew point measured at atmospheric pressure cannot be compared directly with a value at equipment pressure.

Also distinguish sensor response time from the time needed for the complete sampling system to stabilize.

For customers who only need moisture testing, a dedicated dew point meter may be sufficient. Tasks requiring other gas-quality measurements call for a different configuration.

Purity: What Proportion of the Gas Is SF6?

Purity measurement assesses the SF6 concentration in the sample.

The expected gas composition matters. An instrument intended for SF6 mixed with air may require a different configuration or calibration from one used for an SF6/N2 or SF6/CF4 mixture.

Customers should identify the expected background gases and confirm suitability with the instrument supplier.

A high purity reading does not establish that moisture or decomposition products meet their limits. Those require separate measurements.

SO2: One Part of Decomposition-Product Assessment

SO2 measurement provides information about one selected decomposition product.

It does not measure every possible by-product or independently establish the condition of the complete electrical equipment. Interpretation should consider the test history, other measurements and the applicable maintenance criteria.

If a procedure requires H2S, CO or HF measurement, specify those channels separately rather than assuming that an SO2-equipped analyzer includes them.

Gas Recovery: What Happens to the Sample After Testing?

Gas recovery concerns sample handling rather than an additional gas-quality measurement.

Before selecting this function, clarify whether the sample will enter an internal storage vessel, transfer to an external container or return to the equipment.

Confirm the supported pressures, storage capacity, connections and operating sequence. A unit that collects sample gas does not necessarily purify it or establish that it is suitable for reuse.

Matching KSTONE Models to the Task

The KSTONE KS30-3 combines dew point, SF6 purity and SO2 measurement in one portable instrument. It is an option to consider when the required test procedure includes these three measurements.

For applications that also require sample-gas recovery, the KS30-3-R combines these measurements with a recovery function. The recovery arrangement should be checked against the intended site workflow.

What Information Helps Define the Configuration?

Before requesting a quotation, prepare:

  • The equipment type and expected gas composition

  • The required measurements and acceptance criteria

  • The sampling pressure and site conditions

  • The required sample-gas handling method

  • Calibration, reporting and power-supply requirements

These details allow a quotation to address the actual testing procedure. To discuss a configuration with KSTONE, send your required measurement list and application details to info@kstone-sf6.com.
